Autumn Maples Wedding Photoshoot in Japan: Peak Foliage Locations

Autumn maples — koyo in Japanese — is the second-most-coveted bridal photography season in Japan after cherry blossoms. From mid-November to early December, Kyoto's temple gardens, Nara's ancient parks, and the maple-lined paths around Tokyo turn vivid red, orange, and gold. Vermilion shrine architecture and traditional kimono read most powerfully against these autumn colors, making koyo the photographer's favorite season for dramatic, painterly portraits.

Autumn Maples
Best Months

Mid to late November (Kyoto, Nara). Late October to mid-November (Tohoku, Karuizawa, Nikko). Early December for southern Japan.

Visual Mood

Saturated reds and golds, low-angle warm light, painterly contrast. Red and gold iro-uchikake echoes the leaves; shiromuku creates striking visual lift against the warmth.

Pricing Note

Peak surcharge of +15% to +25% during koyo weekends. Kyoto premium studios sell out the entire month of November twelve months in advance.

Booking Advice

Book by previous January for Kyoto November weekends. Late October weekday slots offer better availability with similar visual results.
